CALENDAR OF CAMPUS EVENTS

The following is a preliminary list of events that have been planned for the 2007-2008 Academic Year.  (*Indicates regularly scheduled annual events, but unconfirmed so far for the 2007-2008 Academic Year):

8/18
Friends and Family Cookout, 12 p.m. – 5 p.m., African American Cultural Center. This event serves as a meet and greet for incoming African American students and their families. 

8/20
No Struggle, No Progress: The Wake Up Call, 9 p.m., Foellinger Auditorium. A session for both incoming and returning students, this is the official welcome for African American freshmen. Student organization leaders coordinate this program. The goal of the program is to let them know that there are people who care about them and are here to support them while on campus. Sponsored in-part by the African American Cultural Center.

Taste of Nevada Celebration:, 2-5 p.m., Nevada Street. Co-Sponsored by Cultural Houses. This is a block party that encourages interaction and fellowship among members of the U of I community. 

La Casa Ice Cream Social, 7 p.m., La Casa House. Meet and greet for incoming and returning Latino/a students.

Latino Barbeque/Latina Dinner, 6 p.m., La Casa House. Students only. Event for members and friends of the Latino/a community.

9/4-9/14            
Millercom Visiting Professor Joy James, to lecture on Black women political leaders
“from Fannie Lou Hamer to Condoleeza Rice,” and other related topics, sponsored by the
African American Studies and Research Program

9/6            
Asianation, 6 p.m., Illini Union Ballroom. An orientation event for incoming students,
faculty, and staff to explore the different resources on campus as well and Asian and
Asian American interest student organizations. Co-sponsored by Asian Pacific American
Coalition (APAC) and Asian American Student Housing Organization (AASHO).

“Setting the Stage,” featuring speaker Maria Yellow Horse Brave Heart, Columbia University School of Social Work; introduction to the “Indigeneity as a Category of Critical Analysis” reading group and lecture series sponsored by the American Indian Studies Program; [series will continue each month throughout Academic Year 2007-2008]

Free, sponsored by Indian Student Association.

9/19 - 9/21            
Speak Theater Arts: N*W*C* an original work engaging themes of racial and ethnic
stereotypes.  The three ensemble members will visit campus the entire week of
performances, stimulating discourse in various campus units, including Allen Hall, Unit
One and area public schools.  Sponsored by Krannert Center for the Performing Arts

Co-sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory, and the IPRH

Stereotypes and Perceptions, 12 p.m., Asian American Cultural Center. A discussion of
the Chief in relation to Pekin Community High School, located outside of Peoria.  They
recently changed their mascot name from Chinks to Dragons, despite similar protests to
U of I situation.  Part of Food for Thought series.
